frequently asked questions...

Who can stay at the Refuge?
The Refuge is open to any women, married or single, with or without children. The Refuge has an Equal Opportunities Policy. However some women with drug or alcohol or mental health problems may not be accepted as they may need specialist support.

What about the children?

The Refuge employs 2 Family-Support Workers dedicated to working with and supporting the needs of the children. This includes liaising with local schools and other agencies about their education and development.

What about finances?
A woman with no personal income is usually eligible for Social Security benefits. A housing benefit form is completed on admission and the benefit is then paid directly to the Refuge. If a woman is employed she may be required to pay rent.

What Support is available on leaving?

Taunton Women’s Refuge is open to ex-residents for ongoing emotional and practical support. The Refuge employs a Resettlement Worker who supports women and children preparing to leave the Refuge and while they are re-settling in their new home.

How long do women usually stay?
This varies from days to months. Some women may simply need a break to think and re-evaluate the situation. They may return to their partner to try and work things out. Some women return to their home after taking legal action to evict their partner. Others may decide to relocate to the area. Whatever their choices Taunton Women’s Refuge aims to empower them to make informed decisions and by referring them to other agencies where appropriate.

How safe is the Refuge?
The address of the Refuge is confidential.  Cameras and security systems are in place. The Refuge has a close relationship with the local Police.

What about pets?
The RSPCA has launched the Petsafe scheme, fostering for pets while women are in temporary accommodation. Their pets are returned to them once in permanent accommodation.
